THE YOUTH FARM WAS CONCEIVED OF IN 2010. Ben Shuldiner, founding Principal of the High School for Public Service, imagined converting the 50-year-old lawn on the Wingate Campus into a productive outdoor classroom. He called upon BK Farmyards, a local urban farming organization founded by Stacey Murphy and Elizabeth Bee Ayer, to propose farm plans to the HSPS community. Ultimately, the school voted to have the lawn converted into a productive farm, staffed by trained farmers, that would provide the school and surrounding community with opportunities to engage in growing their own food and cooking with it. Since 2011, the farm has thrived as one of NYC’s largest urban farm sites, providing training opportunities to youth and adults, increasing options for fresh, affordable produce, and creating a vibrant community space that cultivates “radical” change from the inside out.
